Bamboo vs Plastic vs Metal Under Sink Organizers
Under a sink, moisture picks the material: plastic and coated steel shrug off drips, bamboo and raw wood swell and mold at the joints, and cheap chrome wire rusts at the welds. Rule per zone: waterproof at floor level, anything you like above the waterline, and no untreated wood touching the cabinet floor.
The under-sink cabinet is the wettest storage in the house: condensation off cold pipes, drips from hand-tight joints, the occasional real leak. Materials that look identical on a shelf age very differently down there, and the failures are predictable enough to plan around.
Plastic (polypropylene bins, ABS trays) is the floor-level default: it sits in water without caring. Powder-coated or stainless steel earns its price in rails and frames, where stiffness matters; bare chrome wire is the trap, rusting first at the welds. Bamboo looks premium in photos and swells at its glue joints in humidity; keep it on upper tiers, off the floor, or out of the cabinet entirely.

Match material to zone height: waterproof plastic or a leak tray at floor level, steel for anything with rails, bamboo only above the waterline if at all.

What not to buy here
Untreated bamboo or MDF on the cabinet floor, chrome wire under a known-weepy trap, and thin-wall plastic under gallon jugs in a laundry cabinet.
Mistakes this page exists to prevent
- Buying bamboo for the cabinet floor because it photographed well; the first soaked corner stays swollen forever.
- Assuming all metal is rustproof: powder-coated and stainless survive, bare chrome wire welds do not.
- Paying the steel premium for a bin's job; a static bin has no load path that plastic cannot handle.
Common questions
Does bamboo mold under a sink?
It can: bamboo boards are laminated strips, and standing moisture wicks into the glue lines, swelling and eventually molding them. Sealed bamboo on an upper tier is fine; bamboo on the cabinet floor is a gamble.
Will metal organizers rust under the sink?
Depends on the finish: stainless and quality powder-coat survive years of splash; chromed wire rusts first at the weld points, often within a year in a damp cabinet. Check the finish spec, not the photo.
Is plastic strong enough for a pull-out?
For bins and trays, yes. For anything with rails and a moving load, frames and rails should be metal; plastic rails flex, bind and wear oval. Hybrid units (steel frame, plastic basket) are the practical middle.
